Free Tax Prep Helps Josh LIVE UNITED

Recently, we launched a program, in partnership with Walmart and Arkansas Advocates for Children & Families, to promote free tax preparation services in Northwest Arkansas.

We wanted someone who could share their perspective on why being involved in free tax preparation is so important to our community. Below is a post from an Arvest employee and community volunteer who has been involved with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for the past two years.

My name is Josh Turner, and I LIVE UNITED by volunteering to prepare taxes for low-income workers in Northwest Arkansas.

Every year, I am troubled by the anxiety and fear many low-income workers have as they prepare to file their taxes. I became a VITA volunteer to help relieve some of this anxiety; helping remove the fear that pushes many to pay unnecessary tax preparation fees for their simple returns. Many more pay additional fees to walk out of a tax preparation office with their refund in hand.

I take pride in being an IRS-trained VITA volunteer that can prepare returns as good, if not better, than a local commercial tax preparation shop -- even better, it’s free! Returns can be direct deposited to a checking or savings account within three to ten days, and a check comes within a few weeks. All of this helps relieve the stress of tax season. By putting a significant amount of cash back in the pockets of someone who can use it towards providing a safety net for themselves, we are helping, not only make their lives better, but making our community stronger in these tough times we are all living in today.

Thank you, Josh, for being a part of helping make Northwest Arkansas stronger by putting an average of $2,000 back in to the pockets of low-income workers across our region!
